there is a stretch of road about a mile long that is a metaphor for american’s attitudes towards the rest of the world, and i why i generally dislike them. this road is the way i go to work every day so i’ve had a bit to observe and make some conclusions. on this part of highway 99 there are three lanes. the right-most of which ends at the top of the hill at the south end of woodland park. there is a sign informing people to get over, and then a couple hundred feet later the lane just ends in sidewalk. everyone knows this. generally traffic moves fine in the other two lanes, but occasionally it gets a little backed up because of events further down the road.
here’s where the metaphor kicks in: despite the knowledge that the other two lanes are slowing because of traffic further down the road, people persist in driving normal speeds in the far right lane (that ends soon) all the way to the end of it where they have to force their way in, thus causing further backup behind them. completely oblivious or just uncaring that they are now responsible for exacerbating traffic problems. there are a small handful of us that just won’t let them in and force them to wait, but usually there is someone that slows and lets them in, causing further backup.
i’m perfectly aware that this lane exists for driving on but that isn’t what i’m taking issue about. i take issue with the people that wait until the last possible moment to get into the normal flow of traffic expecting someone to just make way and let them in. and people wonder why citizens of other countries have a dislike for us…
