i started commuting by bike to work today. here’s my route if you’re interested.

note the 130ft climb that starts gently at mile 6, then ramps up real hard at 6.75. that’s dexter ave. it’s really fun to go down the other side; cars are barely passing you when you hit top speed. my bike computer stopped working a mile from my house so i don’t really know how fast i got going
. it’s only 10mi one way, so it’s not too terrible. it’s a nice way to start and end the day. i’m also team captain for my company’s group health commuter challenge team. all that really means is i bug people about entering their miles and i get to pick up a free jersey on thursday.
i also forgot to bring underpants. i wrote a haiku about it on my twitter. tessa went and got me underpants at macy’s, we’re meeting for lunch for the handoff.
Fast biking is fun biking!
My friend got clocked going just under 40mph down 65th heading to magnuson park, but he also weighed a lot back then (think Donkey Kong or Bowser).
You’re going to be in great shape come the end of the month. That is one heck of a two-way daily bike ride. Any plans to tackle the Lake Washington Loop shortly thereafter?
I was checking out the bike-path you’re taking and I can’t help but make a few notes:
1) If memory serves, the BG trail passes by View Ridge Swim Club? It is a private pool, open only to members and guests–but my speedy biking friend and I waltzed right in numerous times with no repercussions. I think it probably opens around Memorial Day, and will be staffed by high school kids that just want to please everybody (or just don’t care)–so even if you do get stopped, just write down “Joe Smith” and hop in the pool (also, I have a few actual member names in my rolodex available for the right price).
Also nearby is Sand Point Country Club, which is a quasi-gated community with a private pool and golf course. The pool is smaller, and the people are snootier–which of course makes you smile that much more when you pee in their pool!
2) Do you pass by Zeek’s pizza on Denny Way? That’s my old job (and also the old Pearl Jam studio!)! If their Thai Chicken pizza isn’t biking fuel, I don’t know what is.
3) Your proximity to the old Sand Point Naval Station and Magnuson Park. Magnuson Park is where I played frisbee growing up, and I’m pretty sure they still have Spring Leagues held there every year. If you have any interest in playing ultimate and meeting some fun frisbee-ers, that’s the place to be.
My friend Tyler also found out that the former Sand Point Naval Station now has a community center. The center has handball/racquetball courts for $5/hour. Now, I had never played hand ball or racquetball before last November, but I got hooked right away–and unless you have a gym membership at a place that has racquetball courts, those are the only ones we were able to find anywhere close to NE Seattle.
Good luck on the month of biking, I’ll be sending sunny vibes up north.
haha. bamboozle into the swim club! it’s on the other side of the complex next to us. i don’t go down to denny because that’s suicide. but we order zeke’s at the office from time to time.
i had thought about doing the lake washington loop but that is a really long way. we’ll see. after two days of doing this i feel like dying. i had to switch to my granny gear up dexter and i’m pretty sure i could have walked up faster.
