so i have a fishtank that is beginning to be stocked with fish. right now i have five tiger barbs in there. so i have to wait about four weeks until i can put any other fish in there. the first fish you put in your tank are going to have to live through some really crappy conditions until the nitrogen cycle starts in my filter. so i may lose one or two, but tiger barbs are pretty hardy fish, so hopefully i won’t. once the filter gets going, i’m going to get a spotted catfish, a bunch of tetras, and two angelfish. that’ll be cool. it’ll be like a graduation present to myself, because the four weeks is up after finals week. but for right now, the barbs look pretty happy. they get really stoked when i feed them. i’ve got a kind of conundrum about that. you only really interact with your fish when you feed them, so naturally you’re going to want to feed them a lot, but thats bad. eh well, they’re fun to look at. its really neat to watch them school around my tank, very relaxing. i don’t want to name any of them because i don’t want to get too attached to these brave adventurers. because until the nitrogen cycle gets going, the levels of amonia created by fish poop get kind of high. once the nice little bateria in my filter get going, they’ll turn the amonia into harmless nitrite, then another bacteria starts to form, breaking down the nitrites into even more harmless nitrates. pretty neat huh. hey look at that, its been about 7 hours since i fed my fish.
